Companion Animals and Probiotics

The U.S. retail sales of pet food is expected to climb to $22 billion by 2014, growing about 4% annually. Mr. Poppel’s presentation will provide an overview of the industry, including the consumer behavior that is driving the growth, household pets by type and retails sales by category.
Poppel will share the facts on the rising interest in probiotics as a new product offering in the pet industry, and the science behind product efficacy. He will share the results of product viability from a recent study from Ontario College of Veterinary Medicine, and discuss how probiotic technology is being applied in the pet food industry.

Mr. Poppel is President/Owner of NutraPet Systems LLC, a product development company specializing in products for the pet care and animal health industry. Previously, he was with Nestle Pet Care and Teva Animal Health, and is currently a Business Advisor and Board Member for SCD Probiotics. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Food Science and Technology from the University of Applied Science in Berlin, Germany, and an MBA from Benedictine College (USA).
