SCD Odor Away™ for Odor Control in Large Scale Composting Plant
Missouri Organic Case Study
By Jan Kolbusz
Regular applications of SCD Odor Away™ resulted in a remarkable decline in emissions of foul odor from a facility that composts up to 20,000 pounds of food waste a year.
Missouri Organic is a waste-management company operating in the Kansas City, Missouri (USA). The mission of the company is to reduce the amount of food waste being diverted to landfills and to transform that waste into high-quality, marketable compost.
The major struggle of the company has been emissions of foul odor followed by complaints from area neighbors and fines assessed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The objective of the trial using SCD Odor Away was to reduce foul odors and the resulting monetary fines.
Mr. Kolbusz presents the case study, which began with the application of SCD Odor Away™ in August 2010. Scentometric method of analysis with the use of Nasal Ranger® was adopted. Readings began 5 weeks prior to the start of product application, and continued through the end of the trial period.
Results indicated that the average odor intensity decreased from 7.2 before to 2.6 after SCD Odor Away™ applications, and the occurrence of foul emissions drooped from 42% to 8% respectively. The successful application constituted the first step in a long-term business partnership using SCD Probiotics to a) control odors throughout the composting process, b) reduce fines associated with odors, and c) produce high quality compost for resale purposes.
