Why:

The Chilean earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time, rating a magnitude of 8.8 and lasting 90 seconds. Six Chilean regions (from Valparaíso Region in the north toAraucanía Region in the south) that, together, make up 80% of the country's population, were heavily affected.

The earthquake has caused hundreds of deaths and destruction on a massive scale; relief efforts will continue for many months. They need our help in so many ways. Providing probiotic products to help control odor and restore the ecological balance in the impacted areas is a very effective way we can make a significant difference.

How:

SCD Probiotics, Ecological Resources (Oikos, Chile) and The Earth Organization have partnered to help the people of Chile through providing probiotics to help deal with both environmental and sanitation issues created by this devastating quake. SCD customers and friends, and The Earth Organization’s members and supporters, are asked to make a tax-deductible contribution to The Earth Organization, towards these efforts. SCD Probiotics (USA) will match all monetary contributions with donated products, and with the help of their Miami-based partner, Ecological Resources, will cover shipping costs to Chile. Lorena Sepulveda and her team are on the ground in Chile, are ready to orchestrate the distribution and application of the probiotics to hard-hit areas.

Your contributions are needed now. We will begin shipping the products as soon as possible. Watch for photos and stories later this summer about the impact you will have made.

An initial supply of donated product has already been used in impacted areas, with positive results. Because it has been so effective, the government has requested more. It will be used to handle odors, to help to prevent the spread of disease-carrying pathogens, for waste stream treatment, fly and mosquito abatement, and toxic water and soil cleanup, all of which are enormous problems under the current conditions.
