THE SCD HISTORY

“I believe that the environment we live in and the quality of food has a direct relationship to health and sustainability,” says Matthew Wood, founder of SCD Probiotics.

With this singleness of purpose, M. Wood founded Sustainable Community Development, LLC, (SCD) in 1998. SCD developed the North American market for products manufactured by EM Research Organization, Inc. (EMRO)*. EMRO’s products, based on the principals of effective microorganisms technology pioneered by Dr. Teuro Higa in Japan, provided a sustainable solution to many agricultural problems. Originally developed for use in crop farming as an alternative to chemically-based pesticides and fertilizers, SCD’s strategic direction unfolded from there.

Throughout the following decade, SCD continued to make a substantial investment in research and development, and pursued their mission to deliver products “harnessing nature’s ability to restore personal health & the environment™”. Recognizing the power of beneficial microbes to transform the microbial ecology in any number of environments, the SCD technical team improved product formulations, providing additional value and benefits applicable in a variety of industries around the world.

Technical achievements resulted in new product offerings, including SCD Probiotic Mother Culture concentrate, EM Original**, designed to compete with EMRO’s EM -1. Further advances included a Mother Culture concentrate with enhanced levels of phototrophic, purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB), EM Plus**, and the first ever Mother Culture for human consumption based on effective microorganism applied science, SCD Food Grade**.

With an extensive product line and developing market segments, SCD Probiotics now provides organic, sustainable solutions to 21st century challenges in the following areas:
  • Agricultural
  • Livestock Operations
  • Industrial Waste Treatment and Bioremediation Efforts
  • Aquaculture
  • Human Health
  • Residential Home and Garden
Company Milestones

1996: While attending EARTH University in Costa Rica, M. Wood meets Dr. Higa and begins a close relationship with him, learning about effective microorganisms technology, traveling to countries around the world as a researcher, translator and lecturer.

1997: M. Wood speaks in Bangkok, Thailand at the Fifth International Conference on Kyusei Nature Farming, “EM - Fermented Plant Extract for controlling Pickleworm (Diaphanis nitidalis)”; he returns in 1998 and 1999 as a guest speaker on successful probiotic projects around the world.

1998: Sustainable Community Development LLC, (SCD) was founded by M. Wood; operating from his garage and importing products from overseas, SCD became the exclusive US distributor of products from Japan made using effective microorganisms technology.

2002: M. Wood completed his Masters of Science in Dr. Higa’s laboratory, in Bioproduction from the School of Agriculture, University of Ryukys, Okinawa, Japan. His thesis, based on the use of beneficial microorganisms in controlling odor in a municipal waster water treatment facility in Jefferson City, Missouri, provided a foundation for success in future industrial waste and bioremediation applications.

2004: SCD built a laboratory and fermentation facility in urban Kansas City, Missouri (USA) and began manufacturing products using SCD’s proprietary formulas; SCD’s investment in a highly-skilled research staff and a proprietary technology resulted in the next generation of products developed based on the principals of beneficial microorganisms applied science. ProBio Balance™ Plus and ProBio Food™ (formerly called SCD EM Plus ** and SCD EM Food Grade**) were introduced and sold to a global market.

Several of SCD’s main products are listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in certified organic production.

The first Partner’s Conference was hosted by SCD, with over a dozen international customers gathering to learn more about the applications and benefits of SCD Probiotics Technology and the SCD product line.

2006: SCD Probiotics’ fermentation facility is certified by NSF International, and is compliant with GMP Requirements for manufacturing dietary supplements according to U.S. FDA regulations. This independent third party certification requires the highest levels of manufacturing and quality control processes to gain approval.

SCD began manufacturing its own indoor composter called the Happy Farmer™ Composting bucket and Happy Farmer™ Bokashi (now called All Season Indoor Composter™ and All Seasons Bokashi™) as a sustainable, easy way to compost kitchen waste and enrich garden soil. Since then, over $1 million dollars of composting kits have been sold.

Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, Louisiana and benefits from SCD’s contribution of over $35,000 worth of liquid probiotics to help control the spread of mold.

2007: Expansion of SCD’s production facility took place, providing the ability to increase manufacturing capacity by 156%; additional equipment and supplies were added to facilitate in-house packaging and fulfillment of SCD manufactured products.

2009: SCD Probiotics signs agreement with two preferred retailers in the U.S.A. to expand their distribution capabilities, with Mighty Microbes of California and Midland Probiotics in Missouri.

Three liquid human health concentrates are packaged and sold to support human digestion and the immune system: Xtra Immunity™, SCD Essential Probiotics™ and SCD Herbal Probiotics™.

SCD and its licensee, Effective Environmental Services, successfully completed a recreational lake “clean-up” project for the City of Los Angeles using SCD’s cutting-edge bioremediation and pathogen control technology. The City of Los Angeles has since identified an important beach and ocean front area of Los Angeles for their next remediation efforts using SCD Probiotics Technology.

International business continues to expand as SCD Probiotics’ licensees and distributors encompass partners in Europe, Asian, African, South America, North America and the Middle East.
