Observations made during the tanning of one drum load of raw goat skins:

1. Soaking hours were reduced. Normal soaking duration is about 10 hours; with this system the desired results were achieved in 8 hours. Cleaning the skins removed impurities. No veins were observed if the skins were over-soaked.
2. Without degreasing we found that there was a greater improvement in fat removal of the skins.
3. The usage of lime was reduced. The amount of lime was reduced from 10% to 7%. Even with short-liming the hair removal was fast.
4. Fleshing results were achieved in one stroke. Hair removal was good and did not produce scud marks.
5. Re-liming was not required as the pelts were plump.
6. There was no pickle swelling.
7. Chrome uptake was good with only a 7% solution. The exhaustion of chrome was very good.
8. The skins were flat and the grain was smooth. Drawness was reduced.
9. There was an increase in hide yield as the skins were open.
10. All of the skins were uniformly full.
