Inside SCD Probiotics

We’re powering regenerative health through probiotics

As a life sciences company, we research, develop, craft, and manufacture a diverse portfolio of probiotic-powered products that restore health and balance to humans and the planet—and we’ve been in this business for 20+ years.

Since 1998

SCD Probiotics was founded as Sustainable Community Development by Matthew Wood in 1998, in his garage while at the University of Columbia, Missouri. As a soil science student, Matthew was awakened to the essential role of microbes in agricultural, environmental, plant, animal, and human health. He began marketing and selling probiotic products shortly after, then went on to earn his master’s degree in probiotics research at the University of Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan. He then returned to the U.S. to grow SCD Probiotics into the international company it is today.

Our Patented Microbial Consortia

Most probiotic companies grow individual microbial strains separately (known as the “pure culture” methodology), then combine them during packaging. But this isn’t how microorganisms grow in nature.

We grow our microorganisms together, in “consortia,” so they interact with each other as they develop, forming a small ecosystem. As a result, they become stronger, more resilient, and more effective at working together synergistically—just like they would in nature.
