Sustainability at SCD Probiotics
Working With Nature to Reduce Our Environmental Impact
Petrochemicals are a significant contributor to climate change. Derived from oil and natural gas, the petrochemical industry is responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions. Greenhouse gases are released throughout the entire production cycle—from fossil fuel extraction and refining to the energy-intensive manufacturing of plastics, fertilizers, and countless synthetic products.
At SCD Probiotics, we believe there is a better way.
Our mission is to replace petroleum-based chemicals with biological solutions that work in harmony with nature. By harnessing the power of beneficial microbes, we are helping create healthier homes, healthier farms, healthier waterways, and a healthier planet.
Our Billion Kilogram Goal
Our sustainability commitment is ambitious: replace one billion kilograms of petrochemicals with probiotic-based alternatives.
To put that into perspective, one billion kilograms is approximately the weight of:
- 1 million Toyota Camrys
- 1 million adult male giraffes
Since our founding, SCD Probiotics has helped eliminate 196 million kilograms of synthetic chemicals from the environment—bringing us nearly 20% of the way toward our billion-kilogram goal.
Every liter and every gallon of probiotics used instead of conventional chemicals moves us one step closer to that vision.
Our Sustainability Initiatives
Replacing Petrochemicals with Biology
Our products are designed to replace synthetic chemicals with naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms. Rather than relying on harsh chemistries, biological solutions support healthy ecosystems by working with natural biological processes.
Reducing Plastic Waste
Many of our probiotic products are highly concentrated. Some agricultural and cleaning formulations can be diluted with up to 1,000 parts water for every one part probiotic, dramatically reducing the number of plastic containers required for shipping and storage.
We also encourage customers to recycle all packaging after use.
Renewable Energy
Our commitment to sustainability extends to our own operations.
Since 2011, solar panels installed on our facilities have generated clean, renewable electricity while reducing both our environmental footprint and our energy costs.
Sustainable Packaging
We're continually improving the sustainability of our packaging by:
- Using recyclable paper materials whenever possible
- Choosing products made from recycled materials
- Manufacturing our composter buckets from post-consumer recycled plastics or fully recyclable materials
- Packaging all liquid products in recyclable HDPE #2 plastic containers
Every improvement, no matter how small, contributes to a more sustainable future.
Why Microbes Matter
Long before humans understood microbiology, we lived alongside beneficial microbes.
These tiny organisms have always been essential partners in life. As we eat, they help break down nutrients, support our immune systems, protect us from harmful organisms, and help maintain the delicate balance that keeps us healthy.
Their importance extends far beyond our bodies.
Microbes build healthy soils, recycle nutrients, decompose organic matter, support plant growth, clean water, and drive many of Earth's natural cycles. They are among the smallest forms of life, yet they perform some of the planet's biggest jobs.
Restoring Balance
Modern science has given us incredible tools that have improved human health and quality of life. However, many of these tools—including antibiotics and synthetic chemicals—can also reduce the beneficial microbial communities that healthy ecosystems depend upon.
Over time, excessive use of synthetic chemicals has contributed to:
- Less diverse microbial communities
- Degraded soils with fewer nutrients
- Reduced biodiversity
- Overprocessed foods with diminished nutritional value
- Ecosystems that are less resilient
When microbial communities decline, both environmental health and human health can be affected.
We Are Part of Nature
It is easy to think of ourselves as separate from nature.
But biology tells a different story.
Each of us is an ecosystem. The human body is home to trillions of microorganisms that work alongside our own cells every day. Likewise, our health is inseparable from the health of the larger ecosystems around us.
Healthy soils produce healthier food.
Healthy waterways support healthier communities.
Healthy microbial ecosystems support healthier plants, animals, and people.
The more diverse an ecosystem becomes, the stronger and more resilient it is. Biodiversity isn't simply something worth protecting—it is one of nature's greatest strengths.
Every Action Matters
Every sustainable choice creates a ripple effect.
When you compost food waste, you're feeding beneficial microbes.
When you build living soil, you're improving the health of future crops.
When you reduce synthetic chemical use, you're supporting the natural biological systems that have sustained life for billions of years.
These choices don't just benefit the environment—they benefit our families, our communities, and ourselves.
At SCD Probiotics, we believe sustainability isn't about working against nature. It's about working with it.
Because when microbes thrive, ecosystems thrive.
And when ecosystems thrive, we all do.
